Roulette 2022 & 23

Our student competition celebrates creative excellence and offers opportunities to graphic design students as they start their careers.

Roulette was inspired by the success of Cam’s final project – Paralysed by Perfectionism – which was created as a response to Roulette.

In 2021-22 and 2022-23, The CDCT collaborated with SODA Studio in London to offer finalists from the University of Lincoln mentoring and internship opportunities in addition to us showcasing their work.

From 2023-24, Roulette evolved into a much larger competition, with all six universities involved, and ten incredible studios taking part.

12 starting statements.
One roulette wheel.
No rules.

  • "I really value the opportunity I was given to do an internship at SODA Studio. The team were super welcoming and I got to work on some really exciting projects. The whole experience from the initial brief to the internship was fantastic and I'm really grateful to The CDCT & SODA for making it happen."

    Hesk, Winner of Roulette 2021-22

  • "The internship from SODA gave me invaluable experience of everything from working to tight deadlines, the studio environment and understanding the processes and logistics of working as a designer on large-scale projects, and I'm so grateful to them and The CDCT for the opportunity."

Countless ways of interpretation

Cam’s Roulette project began with his starting statement – I am the lie – where he addressed his own feelings about perfectionism. Other students interpreted the statement in different ways – Erin looked at camoflage, climate change and global warming; Andrew explored the idea of false memories typographically; and Ella created a vegetarian food brand with vegetables ‘dressed as meat’. All students approached the project with their portfolios and aspirations in mind.
